Buxton Flowerpot Trail 2023

The Buxton Flowerpot Trail returned for 2023 thanks to continued support from Derbyshire County Council and High Peak Borough Council Councillors.

The trail ran during July and August alongside all four of the town’s summer festivals.

Theme

To celebrate the return to Buxton in 2023 of the entire International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, the theme this year is the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, so get thinking pirates, fairies and modern major generals!

We put together an overview of Gilbert & Sullivan’s 14 operas and their main characters and selected props to help you come up with some ideas.

Making

We ran making workshops and pick-up-pots stalls at Buxton Spring Fair on Monday 1 May, at Buxton Markets on Saturday 13 May, at The Green Man Gallery yard on Saturday 27 May, 2pm-4pm and at the Rotary Summer Fair in the Pavilion Gardens on Saturday 3 June.

We’re happy to take donations of old pots, subject to prior arrangement. Please get in touch if you would like to donate some.

Register Your Location

The registration deadline to join the trail map was Sunday 25 June 2023.

Best Flowerpot Creation Competition

To support the Buxton Flowerpot Trail, the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival will give out a Best Flowerpot Creation Award at their annual awards ceremony on Friday 11 August! All those who make a G&S-themed creation will be automatically entered. Be sure to tell us which opera you’ve gone for when you register for the trail.

Buxton Flowerpot Trail Map

A printed version of the trail map is available throughout July and August (cost £1) at The Green Man Gallery, Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre and The Pump Room. A few will also be available at Scrivener’s Secondhand Bookshop.

An electronic version was available on our news blog if you want to go paper-free.

The Trail was once again in the Buxton Festival Fringe (5-23 July). It’s always great to support this festival.

Thanks

We were able to run the Buxton Flowerpot Trail project in 2023 thanks to support from Derbyshire County Council Members’ Communifty Fund with contributions from Buxton Councillors, Cllr Linda Grooby, and support from High Peak Borough Council‘s Councillor Initiative Fund with contributions from Cllr Rachael Quinn (Barms) and Cllr Jean Todd (Central).

Thanks ever to The Green Man Gallery, Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre and The Pump Room for selling the maps and to the Buxton Town Team for the continued use of their base map.

And thanks to all the families, individuals and businesses who take part, making flowerpot creations for the trail. It’s wonderful to see the support for this trail and the fabulous, characterful flowerpot creations you make.
