The Owl and the Pussycat 2009

In March 2009, the Funny Wonders Youth Group put on a showcase of their activities at Buxton Community School which centred around a performance of their interpretation of Edward Lear’s poem ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’.

It certainly had a “Funny Wonders twist – I don’t recall a romantic, singing seagull, Winnie the Pooh’s evil cousin Billie the Dude, synchronised swimming fish, a pushy news journalist or talking heavenly bodies in the original poem!

The original idea for the project came from one the members of the Youth Group and again, the whole group was involved in writing the script, making the set and puppets and promoting and organising the event.

Funding applications for the project were also youth-led and managed by a youth steering group. The event and project was funded by the Derbyshire County Council Youth Opportunity Fund, vcashpoint and the Derbyshire Community Foundation.

The showcase also involved a puppet-making workshop, a mascot design competition, a hands-on puppets display, Hands-Up Puppets puppeteer Marcus Clarke, viewings of DVDs of the exchange trip to Sapporo, Japan and short performances by Japanese puppet-master, Nori Sawa. The event and project was also filmed in order to produce a promotional DVD to aid funding applications and recruitment.
